Friction:The resistance force that a surface or object encounters when moving over another surface or object. When relating to machines Friction is one factor that lessens the efficiency of a certain machine. But, Friction does not only appear in mechanical topics, friction is the very thing that we use to pick up various objects during our lives, for example a glass full of water. When we are holding a glass of water the force of gravity is bearing down hard on us while the molecules in our hand stick oradhere with the ones in our glass and resist the force of gravity. In the video to your right you can see the effects of Friction when ScientistA tries to pull a book up an inclined plane and friction resists that pull with a force of two Newtons.
Although Friction helps us very much it is also a tiresome disadvantage to machines. There are ways of lessening the friction between objects, but it is impossible to get rid of it all together. One way to lessen friction in a machine is to lubricate or oil surfaces that would be rubbingagainst eachother. Another way would be to remove as many moving parts in your machine as you can, but be careful if you removed every singlemoving part in your machine it would no longer be a machine. Links: 1.
