Mechanical Efficiency Definition & Explanation: Mechanical Efficiency is the percentage that demonstrates the effectiveness of a machine in transforming the energy that is input by the user to the device into an output force. Mechanical efficiency is measured in a percentage. It is calculated by dividing the work output by the work input and then multiplying it by one hundred to make it a percentage.
One variable that combats one hundred percent mechanical efficiency is Friction. Friction is inevitable when it comes to machines because machines always have moving parts and Friction only occurs with movement.
For example, a fluorescent lightbulb is more efficient than an incandescent lightbulb. The picture on the left is an example of a simple machine, it is a lever. We can calculate the efficiency of this machine.
