Why is Ergonomics Important to Us?

Ergonomics is important to us because it can avoid putting strain to certain parts of our body. This helps avoid short/long term injuries/strains on your body, and prevent medical, and insurance costs.

Ergonomics help avoid CTD's (Cumulative Trauma Disorders). CTD's result when tendons, muscles, and nerves are stressed repetitively. Long periods of time typing or using a mouse (repetition), sitting in the same position (posture), and intensive hours at the computer (lack of rest), are the most common causes of CTD's. This can result in tingling, numbness, pain, loss of strength and coordination, and discomfort in your fingers, wrists, hands, and arms.

Ergonomics also helps avoid eyestrain, mostly from the affect of VDT's (Video Display Terminals). Eyestrain may not sound like a big deal, but the truth is that eyestrain can easily cause headaches, drowsiness, blurred/double vision, increased sensitivity to light, and sore/itchy/tired eyes.

Ergonomics is used in the design of everyday products, but it is important for you to listen to what your body is telling you. If your wrists, spine, neck, legs, any part of your body starts getting sore, or starts to hurt, try to find the cause of the problem. Simply analyze the actions that are causing any pain, and correct them. This makes your environment more ergonomic.
