Energy is defined as the ability to do work. In other words, energy is the ability to apply a force and move an object. (Energy is also measured in the same units as work, Joules)
Example of Energy
Bowling is a fun game to play, but it is also and excellent example of energy. When you bowl, you are trying to knock all the pins down, by rolling the bowling ball. When we roll the bowling ball, we transfer energy on the ball. The bowling ball then applies a force to the pins, knocking them down.
When work is done, energy is transferred from one object to another, or from one form of energy to another form of energy. During a transfer of energy, the energy always remains constant. This means that energy can not be destroyed or can not be created. It can only be transferred or transformed. Most energy actually gets transformed to sound energy and thermal energy (friction), making it seem as if some of the energy was lost, But don't forget energy can not be destroyed!
Forms of Energy
There are many different forms of energy which can be classified into two categories. Kinetic and Potential Energy. Kinetic Energy is the energy of an object in motion, where as potential energy is stored energy. For example a sling shot has both kinetic and potential energy. When the sling shot is pulled back it has stored Elastic Potential Energy. When the sling shot gets released it has Kinetic Energy because the object being shot is traveling at a fast speed.
Another example would be a roller coaster. Gravitational energy is what makes a roller coasters so much fun. When a roller coaster is at the top of a steep and big hill, its gravitational energy has increased. When the roller coaster reaches the bottom of the hill, the gravitational force is what causes it to accelerate, which also increases its kinetic energy.
