"Friction is a force that holds back the movement of a sliding object."Physics4kids Friction is created when two surfaces rub against each other. Friction is what causes the ME of a machine to always be less than 100%.This is beacuse some of the work done by the machine is to overcome friction.
If The ME is a low percentage than there is lots of friction acting upon it meaning the machine is not very effective.
But friction can be decreased (not eliminated) by applying lubricants to the surfaces or by making the area that the friction is acting upon smaller, just to name a few.
Friction gets converted to thermal energy.To find out how much energy is being wasted as heat you must subtract the Work Output from the Work Input.
Example:
Wo = F x d
= 300N x 10m
= 3000J
Wi = F x d
= 200N x 63m
= 12600J
12600 - 200
12400
Therefore there are 12400J of energy that is being wasted as heat.
