Friction

Friction is a force that reduces the mechanical efficiency of a machine. Friction occurs between any moving parts in a machine. A moving part in a machine will rub or make contact with some other part of the machine and this results in a loss of energy. The energy may be lost as heat, sound or vibration. An example of this is in a cars gears. When the gears in the car are moving the gears are rubbing together. To stop this, people add oil to the gears to make them more efficiently by reducing friction. Some lubricants are oil, grease, and water. Not using lubricants would be bad because there would be a reduction of mechanical efficiency and if there is to much friction the gears may break.
