How are the inclined plane and levers the "Parent machines"

The inclined plane and the lever are two of the six simple machines, but did you know that the six simple machines divide into families? The inclined plane is one family and the lever is another.

<-In this picture there are six simple machines: the inclined plane, the lever, the wedge, the screw, the pulley and the wheel and axle. Can you figure out which three of these simple machines belong to the Inclined plane family and which three belong to the Lever family?

<- In this picture there are six machines, the three machines on the left belong to the inclined plane family and those machines are: The wedge and the screw and the inclined plane itself.

On the right of this picture is the lever family those 3 simple machines are: The wheel and axle and the pulley and the lever itself.

The Inclined Plane family

The reasons why the wedge and the screw are sorted into the inclined plane family is because the screw is actually an inclined plane just spiraling around itself.
Examples of a screw are

  • Bottle caps
  • Crock screws
  • Spiral staircases
And many more

The wedge is is made up of two inclined planes facing each other making its end point.

Examples of the wedge are:
  • A fork
  • skates
  • pencil sharpener blade
And many more

The Lever family

The reason why the wheel and axle and the pulley are sorted into the lever family is because the wheel and axle is really just a lever that can rotate a full circle of 360 degrees.
Examples of the wheel and axle are:
  • The wheels of a wheel barrow
  • wheel of a car
  • roller conveyor
And many more.

The pulley falls under the lever family because the pulley is like a wheel and axle but instead of an axle it has a rope or cord that allows one end for the load and another for the effort. As you pull on one end the wheel turns in the same direction and the load comes up., There are many pulleys such as the fixed pulley, the single pulley, movable pulley and the combination pulley. Are all used to lift an object and fall under the lever family.
Examples of the pulley are:
  • Wells
  • A fishing rod reel
  • Raising a flag
  • When going up a chair lift
