How the Lever Works

The lever also follows the law that increasing the distance will decrease the force. If you want to decrease the force needed to lift something, you will have to push (or pull, depending on the class of lever) the effort arm through a longer distance to lift the load. Of course, pushing down is also easier than having to lift because when you lift something, you will have to overcome the force of gravity.
