Automation is a great way to increase productivity. Automated systems are used to replace human workers with machines controlled by a computer without the need of humans. These machines can react to many situations and problems as well. Automation can be used for any task, simple or complicated. An example of something that has been automated is navigation. Before automation, paper maps were used, but with those it was easy to get lost. Before that, people used constelations to navigate. Now, people use GPS's with satelites to get to places without getting lost. Some advantages to automation are that workers will not be needed so you don't have to pay them and that machines do not need to stop working. Some disadvantages are that people would lose their jobs and if a machine breaks down, everything would have to stop working. To read more about automation click here . In may cases, the needs of a society change and the machines in a factory can't meet those needs. If that is the case, the factory owners have two options. Invest in new systems or develop new ones. After the new system is chosen or the old system is changed and before it is installed, the new system must be assesed to show its impact on people, the society and on the enviroment. The criteria used to evaluate a system are, efficiency, safety, cost and the enviromental impact. All 4 are assesed either quantitativly, using number results, or qualitative which is shown by observations. For example for automating a farm, you need to know, how much will it cost, how safe the machines are, how efficient they are and how much it will impact the enviroment. It would cost more and would not be as safe but it would be more reliable so you could do another job while the machine is doing its job. The only problem is that when the machine breaks down, you would have to do the machines job by hand.
