First of all, what is mechanical efficiency?
  • Mechanical Efficiency is the measurement of the effectiveness of a machine in transforming the
energy and power that is input to the device into an output force resulting in movement. Mechanical
efficiency can never be 100% due to friction.

To calculate the mechanical efficiency follow this formula;

ME= work output x100%
mmmwork input

  • This formula gives you the mechanical efficiency in a percent. Say you get 60% as your answer, this would mean that your machine is 60% efficient and that 40% is being wasted as heat due to friction.

To calculate the energy wasted as heat use this formula;

Work output= FxD Work input= FxD

Energy wasted as heat= Wi - Wo
