Forces are always involved whenever a machine is used to do work. When you exert a force on a machine, the machine exerts a force on an object. The force applied to the machine is called the effort or input force (Fin), while the force applied to the object is called the load or output force (Fout). The metric unit for measuring force is the Newton (N).
